Once Upon a Promise

4 star novella review

Author Nicola Davidson writes a lovely story of a married couple, Major Caleb Montclair and his wife Emma.

The story is set up nicely showing a couple who instantly fell in love and were separated for years while Caleb fought Napoleon and also used his post as an excuse to face his past.

Both characters drifted apart by false interpretations of the others feelings. Emma decides a separation is in order and Caleb is finally brought to his senses.

The novella would be perfect but for:

  • A side story was introduced and never completed (and there was no mention of a followup book)
  • The angst with Caleb’ s mom seemed to be central to some of the strife yet it was not developed enough, and
  • I never understood Donald’s interest in Emma. Nice friend or seducer?

Overall it held my interest and I would love a full length version.
